Almost a Day Away...

I think I am finally starting to realize that I am officially studying abroad and leaving home in a little over a day.  Wow.  I am looking forward to it, but at the same time, ridiculously afraid of traveling by myself.  I know I will only have to deal with two flights, which is very comforting, but still...navigating the airports will not be my most fun adventure.

On the up side, I got an email today from one of the editors for SNC's newspaper asking if I would be willing to write a cultural column for every issue.  I agreed after some deliberation (I figured: it's twice a month.  Hopefully I will have enough cultural experiences to write two articles a month).  Annd, I got my international phone.  So, it is all coming together.

Tomorrow my travel money is supposed to be available for pickup - always a good thing.  I think one of my favorite parts about going to other countries is seeing the different kinds of money that exists.  Each place that I've traveled to so far has had different monies.  It's great.  Although, from what I can tell, I think my favorite foreign currency is Australia's.  Those plastic corners are amazing.  And the bills are colour-coded (yes, I realize I spelt "color" the English way.  I'm practicing.).   For those of you who haven't had a chance to see Australian currency, I must say...you should make a point to see some in the future!  It's quite worth the look.  (Wouldn't you agree, Laura?)

Back to Scotland preparations....

Earlier in the evening I surfed around the University website, hoping to find some information pertaining to events hosted on campus during the month of September.  There is a really nice cinema/theatre venue on campus that hosts dramas, movies, and musical performances throughout the year.  One particular drama that caught my attention was Shakespeare's R&J, a play based on Romeo and Juliet.  Shows aren't until the end of September, but if I can

a) find out how much tickets cost
and
b) find someone who would go with me,

I would really like to see the show.  Maybe I will make friends with someone from one of my classes to go with. (Ideally, I'd like to make friends with someone from Shakespeare's Comedies since I will know we both enjoy Shakespeare and theatre, but, we'll see what happens.)  The concept of seeing a play in Scotland seems amazing, doesn't it?

On a slightly darker note, my moods in the last two days swing between really excited to just missing people like crazy.  I think it will be difficult being away from people, even if I will see them in December.  I suppose I have a fear of losing contact with friends and having to start all over again when I get back to the States.  One might say that's ridiculous, but I guess that is just how my brain processes these situations...  The rational part of me says: "Kristen, you'll keep in touch with those who you're supposed to, those who care about you and genuinely are your friends" while my irrational part objects: "But, you might not keep in touch with everyone."  That part worries me.

Oh well.  The bottom line is: I am nervous, afraid, sad, and anxious.

Now that my suitcases are starting to fill out, I realize how precious tomorrow will be.  I can't believe it.  This time tomorrow I'll only have a few hours until my first flight takes off.  Wow.  Scary and simultaneously exciting.

Scotland - what will you hold in store for me?

Hi Kris,

I think Scotland will be good for you. Once you get there and get settled, I'm sure you'll meet other International students and find friends from among them, and, hopefully, from Scotland, too.

(I secretly hope you get an accent while you're there, hehe)

Anyway... I can't believe I'm not going to be seeing you at home for a while. I miss you already and you're not even gone yet.

But, I do hope youenjoy yourself and your time at Scotland. PLEASE keep me updated. And if you need someone to talk to while at the airport and stuff, just call me quick on the International Phone and I'll phone you from the phonecard and all will be set. :) So, don't worry about being afraid. I'll be there to help you out. :D

LOVE YOU SO MUCH. You'll do fine. I have faith in you. I think you're doing a very cool thing doing this, btw. It takes guts and courage and curiosity, which you have plenty of. Just be confident and REMEMBER: CALL ME IF YOU NEED ANYTHING AND I'LL CALL RIGHT BACK.
